PROJECT DETAILS:

The Meadowlawn Addition Project is a new 5th-grade wing extension to the existing Meadowlawn Elementary School. Challenges included creating a new entry for bus and parent drop-off/pick-up and maintaining the existing connection corridor to the playground. The building was sited to accommodate a future expansion so that the new addition could be extended again in the future. The interior partition walls were metal stud construction and gypsum wallboard (in lieu of concrete masonry units, which might be viewed as more conventional) to create a less institutional appearance and a more efficient construction process. All corners were fitted with color-coordinated built-in corner guards and wall protection to alleviate concerns about the impact on the walls. Lockers were recessed into corridor walls, and classrooms were lined with built-in casework and markerboards for further protection. The exterior was cladded with metal panels and brick veneer to match the existing facade, with horizontal accents and vertical patterning to resume the rhythm of existing elevations
